Iâve added pining needy stalker to my repertoire.
Iâm not proud of it, but as the saying goes, it is what it is.
I park my car across from the grocery store, watching Kate climb out of hers and go inside. My knuckles turn white gripped around the steering wheel as I remind myself for the millionth fucking time why itâs bad form to follow her inside.
Iâm not this man; one who obsesses over a woman...even if it is my stepsister.
I lift my gaze to the front of the grocery store, watching the automatic doors close behind her and unleash a low, sickening sound before I yank the door handle and step out of the car.
Goddamnit.
The door closes with a thud and I cross the street and cut across the parking lot. There are other cars parked alongside hers. I search for them as I pass. We donât know what kind of car Watkins drives now. Itâs all for show anyway. Deep down I know it. It isnât the idea of him coming after her that pushes me to watch her.
I just want to.
Shoving my hand in my pocket, I lower my gaze to the ground, tormented by my own fucking realization as I step through the automatic doors and head for the nearest aisle.
The knife I gave her isnât enough. I thought it would be. But what is a knife against someone like Watkins?
Nothing...thatâs what. If he decides today is the day for retribution, then a slice of steel wonât save her, but I will.
I keep to the outside of the store, haunting fruit and vegetables and make my way toward the refrigerators at the rear of the building. Flesh and blood wait, drawing my gaze before I look away.
I walk slowly, glancing down the aisles as I flank the outside of her. Iâm a predator in my own right, stalking my prey. Only this one I donât want to hurt or terrorize. No, this one I want to protect with every ounce of my being and the idea of that sends chills down my spine.
I am not the same man I was before. Some would say that prison changed me, but I know different. Itâs her. Itâs always been her. My Katie...
I clench my fist in my pockets and grind my jaw as I catch the word, âSlut.â
The word is so jarring at first, that I think I misheard. When another comes, I narrow in on the sound.
âBrother fucker.â
Sonovabitch.
Itâs a manâs voice. Faintly familiar. I search my mind for a face to match the sound and narrow in. A twitch spasms in the corner of my eye. I know that voice... I hate that voice.
I move a little faster, rounding the end of the aisle of detergent, and looking to the right. Raymond Pressler has my sister pushed up against the corn chips, one hand blocking her escape against the shelving as he crowds her. She has a basket between them, using it as a barrier, but he pushes against it, driving it into her side.
